Job Description:

Our clients are looking to recruit an experienced Commercial Manager to join their team on a part time, temporary basis. This role forms part of the senior team, reporting to one of the company directors, who is responsible for all communications and interactions across their various sites and locations. 

This interim position is primarily responsible for income generation from sources across the organisation other than ticketing, retail and fundraising activity.  In addition to managing existing commercial partnerships around licensing, publishing and image management, the postholder will identify, and develop business cases around new income streams to generate further revenue for the company

Job responsibilities:

Image Management

  • Support the Image Manager to maximise income generation from usage of images and video assets


  • Oversee existing licensing of their assets
  • Identify new partners and managing existing relationships
  • Negotiating the most advantageous commercial terms from licensing contracts 

Programmes and Publications

  • Work with the Programmes Editor to ensure that all programmes are produced on time, are of the highest quality and are always relevant for the widest possible audience for each production meeting and exceeding, where possible, agreed income targets. 
  • Support the print and e-publishing activity, including self-publication where the business case supports this as well as partnerships with third-party publishers in the UK and worldwide, including the USA and China.

New Income Streams

  • Monitor and contribute to new or existing business cases for commercial income into the organisation
  • Sense checking budgets and providing income projections.  
  • Being part of the team developing a new commercial strategy to further maximise income streams
  • Actively monitor market developments across relevant sectors and amongst suppliers, partners, potential partners and competitors and develop plans which respond appropriately to maintain and increase commercial income

Leadership and Development

  • Deliver responsibilities as a senior Manager, demonstrating and delivering compliance with relevant policies and procedures and strategies

Essential attributes:

The successful candidate will have previous experience working within the arts sector, ideally theatres. You will also have:

  • Personal resilience and ability to manage the pressure of a significant workload in a busy working theatre company.
  • Demonstrable ability to support peers and colleagues by cross departmental collaboration 
  • Commercial acumen – both income generation and working within defined financial. parameters and strong budget management.
  • Creative thinking to deliver multiple different projects at the same time.
  • Ability to identify and implement changes to ensure they perform at the very highest level.
  • Demonstrable ability to work with great attention to detail whilst not losing slight of the bigger strategic picture.
  • Working as part of a large cross organisational project team.
